LEXINGTON, Ky. — Franklin College couldn’t shake host Transylvania but held on to outlast the Pioneers, 68-65, in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball clash Wednesday night.
The Grizzlies improved to 3-2 in the HCAC and 9-3 overall.
Franklin is now tied for fourth place with Hanover in the league standings. Transylvania fell to 4-1 in the league and 8-4 in all games.
Franklin College led by as many as 11 points in the opening half before the Pioneers whittled the deficit to just two points at 29-27 at halftime.
The Grizzlies then pulled ahead by seven early in the second period before Transylvania answered with a 5-0 run to make it 38-36 with 16:25 remaining.
The contest remained tight the rest of the way, with the Pioneers closing to within one point twice in the final two minutes.
But Franklin senior guard Lindsay Rich responded both times, hitting a jump shot to put the visitors up 66-63 with 1:21 left, and dropping in two free throws with seven seconds to go for the game’s final points.
Rich led the Grizzlies with 16 points and nine rebounds. Senior center Jess Prewett contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore forward Lindsey Dall added 13 points off the bench.
