Franklin has approved an agreement with the state to take over ownership of State Road 44 starting next year.

The city will own the road from State Road 144 to the Interstate 65 exit. Franklin plans to start a project to make repairs and improvements on the road in 2015, about two years earlier than the state schedule.

Franklin board of works and city council members approved the agreement, and Mayor Joe McGuinness will sign the contract. The agreement will need to be approved by the state. City officials have been negotiating the deal with the state since summer, and the Indiana Department of Transportation drafted the contract.
