Franklin College sophomore forward Dion Smith was the leader in a pair of conference wins last week and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Smith posted a double-double in wins against Manchester and Anderson, highlighted by a career-high 26 points against the Ravens. He scored 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting in a road win against Manchester and followed that performance with 26 points and 11 rebounds against Anderson.
For the week, Smith averaged a team-high 23.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 3.5 blocks and 3.0 steals per game.
Smith also was recognized nationally for his strong performances last week, earning D3hoops.com Team of the Week honors.
The forward is the second Franklin men’s basketball player to be honored nationally this season. Senior Bailey Howard earned D3hoops.com Team of the Week recognition after scoring 45 points in a win this season against Bluffton University.
Franklin is 9-10 on the season and 6-6 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletics Conference. The Grizzlies host league rival Hanover at 7:30 tonight.
In women’s sports, Franklin College junior Anna Murdock won the 800-meter run at the Rose-Hulman Engineer Invitational Saturday and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.
An Indian Creek graduate, Murdock won the event with an HCAC-best time of 2:19.17, beating the field by more than four seconds.
The Grizzlies placed sixth at the eight-team meet.
