Family rings in new year with baby boy

Daily Journal staff reports

The first baby born in the new year in Johnson County came a little earlier than his parents anticipated.

Zander Owen Wood, born at 9:44 a.m. Tuesday, weighing 6 pounds, 2 ounces, is the second child born to Edinburgh mom Kayla Voorheis, 23, and the first for Clayton Wood, 21, of Hope.

Wood works at Dorel in Columbus, a company that manufactures children’s car seats and furniture. Voorheis is a homemaker.

“I was surprised,” Voorheis said. “I definitely didn’t think he was coming. I thought he’d be here on the 18th.”

Zander had other plans, however, for his parents and the rest of his new family.

Zander was set to meet his brother, 5-year-old Zaiden Voorheis, on Tuesday.

“He hasn’t gotten a chance to see him yet. I think he’s a little jealous but excited too,” Voorheis added.

She said labor was much shorter than with Zaiden. Although she began having contractions between 3 and 4 a.m. Monday, he was born within 20 minutes of final pushing. Zaiden took almost a whole day and weighed nearly two pounds more.

On the outlook for 2013 and their new family, Voorheis said she was just happy that her boys are safe and healthy.

“We’re just looking forward to having a happy family and taking care of our boys,” she said.
