Ex-Trojans standouts enjoy big weeks

Two Center Grove graduates played major roles in leading their teams to victories this past week.

IPFW men’s basketball player Joe Reed had 18 points (5 for 9, 1 for 1, 7 for 8) and eight rebounds, both team highs, along with two assists, in just 18 minutes in the 12-5 Mastodons’ 110-74 win against Kalamazoo. The 6-foot-8 sophomore led his team with eight rebounds in 25 minutes in a 65-60 defeat of Bowling Green. In that game he also had two assists, one blocked shot and one point (0 for 3, 1 for 2).

Arizona swimmer Emma Schoettmer won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.71) and the 200 breaststroke (2:14,86) and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team in a four-way meet with Oregon State, Northern Arizona and New Mexico, won by the Wildcats. The sophomore was fourth of 14 in the 100 IM (2:10.93).

Center Grove

Ball State’s Joel Cox had two solo tackles and assisted on two others, and teammate Garrett Mack was the long-snapper in the 10-3 Cardinals’ 23-20

Go-Daddy Bowl football loss to Arkansas State.

Swimming at the Florida International Invitational, Eastern Michigan’s Grant Schwarz was 15th of 41 in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.81), 13th of 51 in the 50 breaststroke (28.42) and 29th of 78 in the 100 IM (58.25).

Matt Milton won by a fall at 149 pounds in Campbellsville’s 50-6 wrestling win against Darton State and won 9-3 in a 28-18 defeat of Life University.

The Indianapolis wrestlers defeated Shippensburg 31-6, lost to St. Cloud State 27-15 and won 36-9 against East Stroudsburg. Shelby Mappes, competing at 174 pounds, pinned his Shippensburg opponent, was pinned by a St. Cloud State wrestler and won 7-1 against East Stroudsburg.

J.T. Barton had three points (1 for 3, 1 for 2) and one rebound for the Franklin men’s basketball team (6-5, 3-1) in 18 minutes in an 83-67 loss to Illinois Wesleyan and two points (1 for 2), two rebounds and one assist in 11 minutes in a 79-71 defeat of Earlham.

Shelby Shaffer played 39 minutes for the Anderson women’s basketball team (1-9, 0-3) in a 90-58 loss to Transylvania and had 14 points (3 for 9, 2 for 6, 6 for 6), five assists, three steals and two rebounds.

Nikky Moan had one assist in five minutes for the Elmhurst women’s basketball team (8-4, 0-1) in an 82-55 loss to Illinois Wesleyan.

The Indianapolis women’s basketball team (11-2, 2-0) defeated Missouri Science and Technology 81-57 and previously undefeated and sixth-ranked Drury 85-68 in a game played at Drury. Kirsten Gliesmann had three points (1 for 3, 1 for 2), two rebounds and two blocked shots in nine minutes against Missouri S&T and 10 points (4 for 9, 2 for 2), three blocked shots, one steal and a team-high seven rebounds against Drury.

Kelcey Daugherty had seven points (2 for 6, 1 for 3, 2 for 4), one rebound, three assists and one blocked shot in 18 minutes for the Manchester women’s basketball team (7-4, 4-0) in an 83-46 win against Mount St. Joseph.

Katie Lucaites had 10 points (5 for 10), five rebounds, two blocked shots and one assist in 27 minutes for the Oberlin women’s basketball team (6-5, 1-1) in an 86-71 defeat of Wooster.

The Northern Kentucky women’s basketball team (6-7, 2-0) defeated South Carolina-Upstate 76-60 and East Tennessee State 73-63. Melody Doss had 24 points (9 for 17, 3 for 3, 3 for 3) and 11 rebounds (both team highs) and two steals in 29 minutes against Upstate and 14 points (6 for 13, 1 for 2, 1 for 2), five rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes against East Tennessee.

Edinburgh

The Elmhurst men’s basketball team (8-4, 0-1) defeated the University of Dallas 88-70 and lost 104-73 to Illinois Wesleyan. Kyle Wuest had 16 points (5 for 12, 3 for 7, 3 for 3) and seven rebounds and seven assists (both team highs) in 29 minutes against Dallas and two points (1 for 9), four rebounds and a team-high five assists in 27 minutes against Illinois Wesleyan.

Whiteland

Morgan Johnson had 16 points (6 for 9, 3 for 4, 1 for 2), three rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot in 24 minutes for the Lindenwood women’s basketball team (8-5, 3-3) in an 80-79 loss to Pittsburg State (Kan.) and two points (1 for 2, 0 for 2), two rebounds and one steal in 24 minutes in an 81-66 loss to Emporia State, Kansas.

The IU-Southeast women’s basketball team (7-6, 3-1) lost 92-63 to IUPUI, defeated Carlow 92-56 and lost 79-77 to Point Park. Michaela Harris had three rebounds in 19 minutes against IUPUI; 14 points (5 for 10, 1 for 2, 3 for 4), four rebounds and one steal in 20 minutes against Carlow; and two points (0 for 5, 2 for 2), three rebounds and one blocked shot in 23 minutes against Point Park.

Haley Howard had four points

(2 for 8), three rebounds, one assist and one steal in 20 minutes for the Butler women’s basketball team (7-7, 2-1) in a 68-65 win against Providence and two points (1 for 5), six rebounds and two assists in 20 minutes in a 75-69 defeat of Seton Hall.

Greenwood

Kelsie Ratliff had a team-high 16 points (6 for 13, 4 for 6, 0 for 0), 10 rebounds, two steals, one assist and one blocked shot in Danville Community College’s 74-48 women’s basketball win against Oakland Community College. Danville (11-5) defeated Prairie State 60-48; and the freshman had two points (1 for 5), four rebounds, two steals, two blocked shots and one assist.

Franklin’s Nichole Thompson had 11 points (4 for 6, 3 for 5), two rebounds and one steal in 19 minutes in a 67-56 women’s basketball defeat of Earlham.

The Marian women’s basketball team (9-7, 2-2) defeated St. Mary-of-the-Woods 103-72 and lost 71-33 to Indiana Wesleyan. Deauna Evans had nine points (4 for 7, 1 for 2), seven rebounds and one assist in 22 minutes in the win and two points (0 for 1, 2 for 4) and three rebounds in 15 minutes in the loss.

Indian Creek

The Regis women’s basketball team (6-5, 4-3) lost 65-63 to Western New Mexico and won 80-73 against New Mexico Highlands. Erica Von Stein had 11 points (3 for 11, 3 for 9, 2 for 2) and four assists and five steals (both team highs) in 39 minutes in the loss and nine points (3 for 7, 1 for 7, 2 for 2), five rebounds and four assists in 40 minutes in the win.

Indianapolis wrestler Aaron Stevenson lost by a fall at 184 pounds in the Greyhounds 36-9 defeat of East Stroudsburg.

Franklin

The Judson men’s basketball team (5-12) lost 90-64 to the University of Windsor, Ontario, and 112-50 to IUPUI. Keenan Wood had four points (2 for 10, 0 for 2), four rebounds and one assist in 45 minutes in the two losses.
