Ex-Greenwood coach pleads guilty

An ex-Greenwood Community High School teacher and coach who was charged with having a sexual relationship with a student has pleaded guilty to two counts of child seduction.

Tim Guilfoy, 37, was originally charged with seven counts of child seduction after police found him with a 17-year-old student parked in a truck in the 8800 block of Madison Avenue on an early morning in March. Guilfoy and the student were both naked, and Guilfoy told police they had been having sex in the truck.

Guilfoy was initially charged for each instance of a sex act with the teen. He pleaded guilty to two of those counts on Tuesday in exchange for having the remaining five counts dismissed, Marion County Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson A.J. Deer and court documents said.

Guilfoy also agreed to an eight-year sentence, though three of those years will be suspended. The court must decide where Guilfoy will serve his five years, and he’ll be on sex-offender probation for the remaining three, the court documents said.

As part of the agreement, Guilfoy cannot hold a teaching position and he cannot contact the teen or her family, the court documents said.

Guilfoy, who resigned after his arrest, had been a teacher at Greenwood since 2000 and coached girls golf for several years.

An investigation showed that his relationship with the teen had gone on for about two months.

The teen told police she knew Guilfoy because he was a teacher and strength and conditioning coach at Greenwood. Their relationship started through talking and texting on the phone and through social media. The student said she sent Guilfoy sexually explicit messages and photos of her in her underwear, and that he had indirectly encouraged her to do so.

Under Indiana law, adults can be charged with child seduction if they have a sexual relationship with someone between 16 and 18 years old and are in a position of trust or authority, including being a teacher.
