Edinburgh ends regular season by getting past Brown County

The Edinburgh boys basketball team entered Thursday night’s regular-season finale looking for momentum.

The Class A Lancers got what they were looking for in the form of a 57-45 win against visiting Class 3A Brown County.

And it couldn’t have come a a better time.

After enduring a stretch of four straight losses, the Lancers beat Mid-Hoosier Conference rival Southwestern (Shelby) on Tuesday and will now take a two-game winning streak into the postseason

Tournament-host Edinburgh (13-1) plays Morristown (13-6) on Feb. 27. The Yellow Jackets defeated the host Lancers 55-52 on Jan. 25.

Against Brown County, Edinburgh, with a starting lineup of all seniors, took charge at the opening tip and never looked back — though the Lancers did get a scare in the fourth quarter.

With a patient offense that was hot from 3-point range, the Lancers led 15-10 at the end of the he first quarter. They pushed the

advantage to 29-18 at halftime.

Edinburgh connected on 5 of 12 3-point shots in the first half.

In the second half, the Lancers went to more of an inside attack, feeding Nathan King and Ryan Burton for frequent layups. But a 3-pointer by Riley Price in the final minute of the third period gave them their biggest lead of the game, 48-28.

But things didn’t go as smoothly for the Lancers early in the fourth quarter.

Brown County parlayed six Edinburgh turnovers into a 12-0 run that trimmed the Lancers’ lead to 48-42.

Following a timeout, the Lancers got their offense back on track and pushed the lead to 52-43 with 4:34 remaining.

Brown County didn’t pose a serious threat after that.

Price led the Lancers with a game-high 19 points. He also made 4 of 7 3-point attempts.

Caleb Giles and 15 points for the Lancers, and King had 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Seniors Steven Norman and Tony Goral each scored 13 points to lead the Eagles.
