A Franklin woman was injured after a four-car crash in a construction zone.
Shelby Burkhart, 20, struck a car stopped at a construction zone on State Road 135, where workers with flags were directing traffic around highway crews who were blocking the northbound lane of County Road 100S near Trafalgar, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Charles Murphy said. The crash happened at about 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Burkhart was taken by medical helicopter to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She had a broken leg, fractured hip and ankle, broken ribs and other internal injuries, but was in stable condition, Murphy said. She was conscious and able to talk to officers but said she thought she had lost consciousness temporarily because she couldn’t remember the accident or what caused it, he said.
Burkhart’s car slammed into one stopped car, which shoved the car in front of it into another car, according to a police report. The third vehicle was smashed between two of the stopped cars, and the third car’s driver, Tammy Dotson of Trafalgar, also was hurt. Dotson was taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital to be treated for head and neck pain, Murphy said.
Drivers Kyle Wagers of Morgantown and Hannah Abraham of Trafalgar, who also were involved in the accident, were not injured.
