Franklin’s Adam Destrampe swam fast at Friday night’s preliminaries of the IHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving State Finals.
He was fast enough to put his goal of two top-three finishes within reach at today’s 1 p.m. finals at the Indiana University Natatorium on the IUPUI campus.
Destrampe, a sophomore, reached the finals in both the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events. In the 200, he finished in 1:41.38, better than his qualifying time of 1:42.01. He shaved more than six seconds off his 500 qualifying time, clocking in at 4:31.95, fifth fastest of the night.
No other Johnson County swimmers or relays advanced to the finals. However, four individuals and three relays will compete in consolation races today.
Swimming in consolation races will be: Center Grove junior Dan O’Brien in both the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke; Franklin sophomore Clayton Culp in the 200 freestyle; Center Grove senior Jake Eckert in the 100 butterfly; and Indian Creek junior Levi Brock in the 100 freestyle.
Franklin’s 200 and 400 freestyle relays, which both include Destrampe, will swim in consolation heats, as will Center Grove’s 200 medley relay team.
Center Grove senior Joshua Carmichael is the only county diver who advanced to this morning’s preliminary competition, which begins at 9 a.m.
Three state records fell in Friday’s preliminaries. Chesterton’s Aaron Whitaker had a hand in all three. The junior set new state bests in both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and anchored Chesterton’s 400 freestyle relay team that took over two seconds off the old record.
