Crash kills Indy deputy

Follow Daily Journal:

A Marion County Sheriff’s Department deputy was killed after he lost control of his motorcycle after hitting a pothole.

Eric W. Stofer, 35, of Indianapolis, was traveling south on Acton Road about 7:30 p.m. Sunday when he hit a pothole just a few hundred feet north of the Johnson County line.

Stofer lost control of the motorcycle, which then fell on top of him, according to an Indiana State Police news release.

Stofer, who was off duty, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, the release said.

Police do not believe that speed or alcohol was a factor in the crash. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Stofer had worked for the Marion County Sheriff’s Department since 2003 as an inmate transportation deputy in the jail.

Marion County Sheriff John Layton said Monday he wasn’t aware of any complaints about potholes on Acton Road and that the city has done a good job responding to the worst holes.

Since the crash happened close to the county line, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputies were initially was notified about the accident but were called off because the crash occurred in Marion County, Sheriff Doug Cox said.
