A local judge has ruled that a Trafalgar mother accused of killing her 3-year-old son is not able to stand trial now.

Amanda M. Smith, 33, was charged with murder after police said she drowned her son, Jacob Smith, during an overnight visit in February. She told police her family was turning the boy against her, and she couldn’t imagine anything good coming from his life.

Both the prosecutor’s office and Smith’s defense attorneys agreed with the ruling in Johnson County Superior Court 2 that she is not able to understand the criminal case against her or assist with her defense, according to court documents.

Smith will be sent to Logansport State Hospital, and the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction will evaluate her and decide on a treatment plan with the goal that she eventually would go to trial, Prosecutor Brad Cooper said.
