A woman believed a caller who was pretending to be her grandchild and asked for money, but relatives kept her from falling for the scam.
She was one of at least four Johnson County residents who have encountered this scam within the past week or so.
On Friday, a man called the woman and told her he was her grandson and that he had been arrested in California, according to a police report.
He told her he needed her to send $3,000 to get home, the report said.
The woman’s relatives called the grandson, who was at work in Indiana and hadn’t been arrested, the report said.
The woman did not lose any money.
