County jobless rate inches up

Follow Daily Journal:

Unemployment in Johnson County increased slightly in February, but the county’s jobless rate was one of the lowest in the state.

In Johnson County, the unemployment rate increased slightly from 5.5 percent in January to 5.8 percent in February. The county’s jobless rate is significantly less than the same month a year ago, when 7.1 percent of the labor force was looking for work in February 2013, according to a report from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The state’s jobless rate dropped to 6.1 percent in February, compared to 6.3 percent in January. The state has less than 200,000 people looking for the work for the first time since 2008, according to the report.

More construction and tourism jobs were added statewide, but the report showed slight job losses in private educational and health services.

The national unemployment rate in February was 6.7 percent, a slight increase from the 6.6 percent rate in January.

Three central Indiana counties — Boone, Hamilton, and Hendricks — continued to have a lower jobless rate than Johnson County.
