Collision with ambulance ends in man’s arrest

Follow Daily Journal:

An Indianapolis man was arrested after an accident with an ambulance.

Claudio Avila, 40, was arrested on a charge of operating while intoxicated refusal.

Avila would not take field sobriety tests Friday night. Police got a search warrant and drew his blood, which will be tested, according to the accident report.

If the blood test is positive for alcohol and is above the legal limit for intoxication, the sheriff’s office will ask for a warrant for his arrest on a charge of operating while intoxicated, Sheriff Doug Cox said.

Avila was driving east on Rocklane Road near Greenwood about 11:30 p.m. when his car crossed the center line, according to a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

Evan Hill, 42, of Fairland, was driving a city of Shelbyville ambulance west on the road. He was taking a patient to Franciscan St. Francis Health-Indianapolis, according to the report.

Hill saw Avila’s car in his lane, slowed down and started pulling to the side of the road, but the car still hit the ambulance, the report said.

Sheriff’s deputies smelled alcohol when speaking with Avila, according to the report.

Avila, 8716 Maze Road, was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was held on $1,000 bond.
