College update: Former local players sidelined with injuries

Division I women’s basketball players Morgan Johnson, a St. Louis University sophomore, and Haley Howard, a Butler sophomore, both Whiteland Community High School graduates, have yet to see action this season because of injuries.

Howard played in one exhibition game before it was learned she had a stress fracture in her leg.


The Defiance men’s swimmers defeated Ursuline and lost to Baldwin Wallace in a three-way meet. Braden Perry was the only contestant in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:41.55) and was third in the 500 freestyle (25.90) and third in the 50 freestyle (25.90).


Evansville’s Abby Smith was a member of the winning 800 relay team in a dual meet with Eastern Illinois. All the events in the meet were relays.

Indian Creek

University of Indianapolis wrestler Aaron Stevenson is redshirting this year.

The Regis women’s basketball team (3-5, 3-2) defeated Chadron State 73-49 and Black Hills State 86-50. Erica Von Stein played a total of 13 minutes in the two games and had one rebound.


Franklin basketball player Nicole Thompson is averaging 11.6 points and 9.6 rebounds in 22.7 minutes per game for the Grizzlies (6-3). She is shooting .427 from the field and .618 from the free-throw line and has missed each of her four 3-point shots.


The Ancilla basketball team (6-3) lost 98-60 to Danville Community College. Corey Burton started for Ancilla and had one point (0 for 6, 1 for 3), four rebounds and one steal.

The Elmhurst basketball team (2-6) defeated Lawrence 76-65 and lost 82-56 to Westminster, Missouri. Kyle Wuest had five points (1 for 3, 1 for 2, 2 for 2), three rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes in the win and four points (1 for 6, 1 for 4, 1 for 2), three rebounds and one assist in 23 minutes in the loss.

Center Grove

The St. Mary-of-the-Woods basketball team (2-9) lost

80-74 to Rose-Hulman. Brittany Shaner had team-highs of 18 points (6 for 19, 1 for 4, 5 for 6), 11 rebounds and five steals for the Pomeroys.

The Northern Kentucky women’s basketball team lost 66-56 to Butler. Melody Doss had two points (1 for 3) and one rebound in seven minutes.

Kirsten Gliesmann had

nine points (4 for 7, 1 for 2), three rebounds and three steals in 27 minutes for the Indianapolis women’s basketball team (6-1) in a 70-54 loss to undefeated Ashland.

The Elmhurst women’s basketball team (4-4) lost 71-65

to Edgewood and won 86-79 against Westminster, Missouri. Nikki Moan had seven points (3 for 3, 1 for 1, 0 for 0) and three

rebounds in nine minutes in

the loss and two rebounds and

one assist in seven minutes in the victory.

The IPFW men’s basketball team (5-7) lost 74-62 to Notre Dame. Joe Reed had six points (2 for 6, 2 for 2, 0 for 0), three rebounds and one steal in 20 minutes.

J.T. Barton has played in all nine games, starting seven, for the Franklin men’s basketball team (5-4). He is averaging 8.3 points (.446 from the field, .333 from 3-point range, .875 from the free-throw line) and 2.1 rebounds in 26.7 minutes per game. He has 13 assists and a team-high 17 steals.

Teammate Mark Kwiatkowski has played an average of 14.1 minutes per game and has scored 16 points, with eight rebounds, seven assists, one blocked shot and four steals.

Indianapolis wrestler Shelby Mappes, competing at the Midwest Classic, lost 9-0 to Lindsey Wilson in the first round and 4-3 to Upper Iowa in his first consolation round match.
