College update: Ex-Center Grove star scores goal in first match

Freshman soccer player Gabe Edel, a Center Grove graduate playing in his first collegiate match, scored Drake’s only goal at the 81-minute mark to tie Luther 1-1.

However, Luther scored on a penalty kick at the 87-minute mark to win the exhibition opener 2-1.

Center Grove

The Marian women’s tennis team defeated Indiana Wesleyan 5-4 to end the Wildcats’ 241 fall-match winning streak dating back to 1995. The streak included all of their Crossroads League matches during that period. The Knights’ Grace Neathery won 9-7 at No. 3 doubles and lost 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.

The Taylor volleyball team opened its season with four wins in five matches, defeating Union of Kentucky, Cumberland, Lourdes and Rio Grande, and losing to Northwestern Ohio. Sophomore Jessi Arbuckle played in one game in the loss and had one kill.

Indian Creek

Taylor Kinney lost 8-2 at No. 3 doubles in Marian’s 6-3 men’s tennis win against Indiana Wesleyan.

The Cincinnati Christian volleyball team opened its season with a 3-0 win against Miami-Middletown. Ellie Abel had 16 assists, seven digs and one service ace for the winners. Teammate Hollie Carrico had three kills and two digs in one game.

Greenwood

Katie Walsh lost 8-4 at No. 3 doubles and 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles in IU-Southeast’s 9-0 tennis loss to Indiana Wesleyan.

Whiteland

Taylor’s Jacob Scott lost 8-1 at No. 3 doubles in a 9-0 men’s tennis loss to Cardinal Stritch.

Franklin

The IU-East volleyball team (2-3) defeated Goshen and IU-Kokomo and lost to Judson, Grace and Indiana Tech. Freshman Katie Kelly was the setter in the first two matches and had 60 assists, 20 digs, three blocks, three kills and one service ace. In the following three matches, she had 23 digs, two assists and three service aces.

Patrick Palmer saw action as a substitute for the Eastern Illinois soccer team in a 1-1 exhibition tie against St. Xavier. In the next exhibition match, a 1-0 defeat of Illinois-Springfield, the freshman defender was a starter and took one shot on goal.
