College update: Edinburgh graduate powers softball team

Taylor softball player Taylor Murray had eight hits, including three home runs and one double, in 17 at-bats to raise her batting average to .296 (16 for 54), an 80 point increase.

The Edinburgh Community High School graduate played in seven games for the 12-16 Trojans, who lost two to St. Francis, split two with Grace and Goshen, and won two against Mount Vernon Nazarene, and had seven RBIs. The freshman has played error-less ball behind the plate and has eight assists.


Nisha Brown has three hits in seven at-bats (.429) for the IU-Southeast softball team and has a 1-0 pitching record with a 0.91 ERA in 15-1/3 innings on the mound


Quincy baseball pitcher Clayton Hicks (3-3) won his third game of the season with a one-run, three-hit, eight-inning effort against William Jewell. The senior struck out eight and walked only one in the 9-1 win.

Ashton Perritt is batting .297 (11 for 37) with two home runs for the Liberty baseball team (18-16). As a pitcher he is 2-0 with a 2.03 ERA and three saves. In 13-1/3 innings he has given up nine hits and five walks and has struck out 16.

Tyler Ison is hitting .196 (10 for 51) for the Franklin baseball team (11-12, 4-6). Taylor Scott has pitched in three games and has yielded four earned runs in 4-1/3 innings.

Franklin golfer Sarah Craven was second for the Grizzlies and 51st of 112 overall with scores of 89-82—171 at the Washington of St. Louis Invitational.

Jared Hunt won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and 8-4 at No. 2 doubles in Franklin’s 7-2 tennis win against Manchester.

The West Chester tennis team defeated Shippensburg 9-0, Philadelphia 6-3 and Millersville 5-4 and lost 6-3 to Holy Family. Brittany Counts won two and lost two at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.

Brooke Harmening is batting .350 (35 for 100) with seven home runs in 31 games for the Southern Indiana softball team (19-12). As a pitcher she is 15-6 with a 1.49 ERA.

Shelby Wilson is hitting .353 (42 for 119) with seven doubles, six home runs and 26 RBIs, the latter two team highs, for the Indiana State softball team (14-24).

The Indianapolis men and women competed at the Bellarmine Track and Field Invitational. Farin Hickman was fourth of 25 in the women’s discus (120-8) and 13th of 23 in the javelin (92-0). Tyler Barker was 52nd of 61 in the 1,500 meters (4:28.81) and 54th of 65 in the 800 (2:09.46). Marian’s Charles Harmening was 28th of 36 in the men’s discus (107), 20th of 37 in the hammer (133-5) and 23rd of 34 in the javelin (117-8).


Devyn Barker had six hits in 19 at-bats for the Southeastern softball team (18-15), which won two against both Northwood and Lindenwood-Belleville and split two with St. Thomas.

Zack Shultz is batting .343 (24 for 70) in 19 games for the Hanover baseball team (14-10, 7-4). Teammate Trent McIninch is hitting .310 (9 for 29) in 10 games.

Conner Morris has played in 23 games, 20 of them starts, for the Anderson baseball team (10-14, 6-5) and is hitting .250 (17 for 68).

Trevor Cox won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles in Indianapolis’ 6-3 tennis win against Bellarmine and lost 6-4, 6-0 in a 5-4 loss to McKendree.

Ryan Hammer lost 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and 8-5 at No. 1 doubles in Franklin’s 7-2 tennis win against Manchester.

The Indianapolis women’s tennis team defeated both Bellarmine and McKendree by 7-2 scores. Taylor Eckert won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and 8-6 at No. 1 doubles against Bellarmine and won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles and lost 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 singles against McKendree.


Indiana’s Lyndsey Wall was 25th of 35 in the 1,500 meters (4:45.55) and was a member of the second-place distance relay team at the Florida Track and Field Relays.

Luke Snyder won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and 8-4 at No. 2 doubles in Franklin’s 7-2 tennis win against Manchester.

Alyssa Barr is batting .444 (4 for 9) with five RBIs for the Manchester softball team (13-9).

Donnie Waters is hitting .250 (14 for 56) with four doubles and eight RBIs in 23 games, 16 of them starts, for the Rose-Hulman baseball team (9-14).

Indian Creek

Indiana State’s Katie Wise was 13th of 63 in the 100 dash (11.85) at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic.

Lindsey Richards is batting .258 (25 for 97) for the IUPUI softball team (15-19). She is one of three players who have started every game.

Shelby Hullett lost 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and 8-1 at No. 1 doubles in IUPUI’s 7-0 tennis loss to Detroit.

The Marian tennis team lost 8-1 to IUPUI and defeated Wabash 7-2.

Taylor Kinney lost 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles against the Jaguars and won 6-0, 6-2 in singles and 8-4 at No. 3 doubles against the Little Giants.

Center Grove

IU-Southeast baseball player Bradley Walker has earned a place in the starting lineup and is batting a team-high .484 (15 for 31) for the 22-20 Grenadiers.

Pitcher Nolan Clayton has a 3-3 record with a 4.09 ERA in seven games, six of them starts, for the Missouri-St. Louis baseball team (12-14). He has given up 26 hits and 15 walks and has struck out 25 in 33 innings.

Chris Pearson has started all 34 games for the Evansville baseball team (14-20) and is batting .294 (35 for 119) with three doubles and two home runs.

Pitcher Zach Anderson has a 2-0 record with a 1.50 ERA for the Danville Community College baseball team. He has pitched in five games, four of them starts, and has given up 14 hits and five walks in 24 innings and has struck out 16. Teammate Brock Sokolowski is batting .125 (3 for 24) in 11 games.

Zach Garcia is batting .234 (18 for 77) in 21 games, 20 of them starts, for the Anderson baseball team (10-14, 6-5).

Brice Laigle is hitting .179 (5 for 28) for the Marian baseball team (6-17).

Rose-Hulman golfer Kent Kraus was fifth for the Engineers and 50th overall with scores of 88-83—171 at the Hanover Invitational.

Alex Franklin is batting .235 (4 for 17) for the St. Joseph’s softball team (18-11). Sarah Franklin has a 7-6 pitching record with a 1.64 ERA and three shutouts.

Emily Gwaltney has started all 24 games for the Marian softball team (17-7) and is batting .418 (28 for 67). She has started 12 games as a pitcher, completing 11, and has relieved twice. The senior has a 9-3 record with a 1.68 ERA and has given up 57 hits and 14 walks while striking out 79 in 79-1/3 innings.

Shelby Young is hitting .302 (29 for 96) in 30 games, all starts, for the Cedarville softball team (17-14).

Shelby Music is hitting .281 (18 for 64) with 21 RBIs, third best on the 20-15 Illinois State team, in 27 games, 22 of them starts.

Rose-Hulman competed at the Bellarmine Track and Field Invitational. Ryan Meyer was seventh of 17 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:12.10); Evan Land was 32nd of 42 in the 400 meters (54.20); and Nathan Catt was 12th of 61 in the 1,500 (4:02.10) and 19th of 65 in the 800 (2:00.43). Indianapolis’ Kyle Schwartz was 20th of 64 in the 200 (22.63) and was a member of the winning 3,400 relay team. In the women’s events, the Greyhounds’ Katie Watson was third of 25 in the discus (127-9) and seventh of 26 in the shot put (39-2¼).

Azusa Pacific’s Sarah Higgens ran her first sub-five minute 1,500 meters in (4:57.74) at the Mangrum Track and Field Invitational at California State-Marcos.

Ball State’s Austin Sansone won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles in the Cardinals’ 5-2 tennis loss to Notre Dame.

Diane Jones won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles in Indiana Wesleyan’s 7-0 tennis win against Purdue-Calumet.

The Indianapolis men’s tennis team defeated Bellarmine 6-3 and lost 5-4 to McKendree. Caleb Fellers won 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 against Bellarmine and 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 against McKendree at No. 6 singles and lost 8-5 at No. 3 doubles against McKendree.

Jamie Claeys defeated Emily Claeys 8-6 at No. 3 doubles in Bellarmine’s 7-2 tennis win against St. Joseph’s. Jamie Claeys lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 singles and won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles in a 7-2 loss to Indianapolis and lost 8-4 at No. 3 doubles in a 5-4 loss to West Alabama. Emily Claeys won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and 8-4 at No. 3 doubles in St. Josephs’ 6-3 loss to McKendree and lost 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to Alyssa Hoover in Southern Indiana’s 7-2 win against the Pumas. Southern Indiana lost 8-1 to Western Kentucky and 7-2 to Lewis. Hoover lost in straight sets at No. 5 singles in both matches
