Churches collecting gift boxes for children

Johnson County volunteers with Operation Christmas Child are filling shoe boxes with toys, school supplies and hygiene items for needy children overseas.

The program is a year-round project of international Christian relief organization Samaritan’s Purse, headed by Franklin Graham.

The organization expects to collect more than 42,000 gift-filled boxes during National Collection Week, Nov. 12 to 19.

Packed boxes may be dropped off at two Johnson County locations — New Hope Church, 5307 W. Fairview Road, Greenwood; and Franklin First Assembly of God, 1035 Hospital Road, Franklin.

The boxes will be hand-delivered to underprivileged children in 100 countries around the world.

Operation Christmas Child uses tracking technology to allow participants to “follow” their box to the destination country where it will be given to a child in need. To register shoe box gifts and find out the destination country, use the “Follow Your Box” donation form found at |
