The Franklin College women’s basketball team suffered a narrow 59-54 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference loss at Bluffton University on Saturday.
The loss evened the Grizzlies’ conference record to 1-1 for the season.
Franklin (2-6, 1-1 HCAC) trimmed a 12-point first-half deficit to trail 36-31 at halftime. The Grizzlies used a 7-0 run over the final 1:50 to trim the margin to five points.
The Grizzlies scored the first six points of the second half to take a 37-36 lead. The two teams exchanged leads throughout the second half. Franklin took a 46-43 lead at the 10:08 mark following a three-point play by freshman Lauren DeSutter.
But Bluffton (3-4, 1-1 HCAC) used a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to hold a four-point advantage, 50-46.
Later, a three-point field goal by sophomore Katie Brewer cut Bluffton’s lead to 54-53 with 1:36 remaining. The Beavers converted back-to-back field goals from Kaitlyn Pennekamp to take a 58-53 lead in the final minute.
Brewer led the Grizzlies with 15 points and eight rebounds. DeSutter added 11 points, including two three-point field goals.
