Bicyclist seriously injured

Follow Daily Journal:

An Edinburgh man was hospitalized early Sunday morning after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle.

Brandon Ocasio, 30, of Edinburgh, was riding his bicycle south on the shoulder of U.S. 31 near County Road 350 South near Amity when he was hit by a vehicle.

The accident happened about 1 a.m.

Justin Hecock, 30, of Blue Springs, Mo., was driving his car south on U.S. 31 when he hit Ocasio. Hecock told deputies he saw Ocasio just before the collision but couldn’t avoid hitting him, a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report said.

Ocasio was flown by medical helicopter to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was in serious condition Sunday afternoon.

Both Ocasio and Hecock had their blood drawn, which is standard procedure in a serious crash investigation.

Toxicology results should be available in a few weeks, and a report will be sent to the Johnson County prosecutor, who will decide whether to file any charges, Sheriff Doug Cox said.
