Bargersville wants White River Township to agree to a new merger study that includes the town and plans to annex massive amounts of land if the township says no.

The White River Township Board has an opportunity to redo a merger study and get it right, town attorney Nicholas Kile said. This time, White River Township, Bargersville and Greenwood all could participate, he said.

If the board doesn’t agree, Bargersville will give all township residents who live south of Stones Crossing Road the choice of being annexed into the town. The town council introduced a 2,500-acre annexation that Bargersville would pursue only if its proposal for a new merger study were rebuffed.

The town hopes to merge with or annex all township land in the Bargersville Fire Protection District that’s not already inside town borders. Bargersville wants to protect the fire service borders because its residents’ property taxes would go up if the district were to shrink, Kile said.
