A Sunday church service was interrupted when police say a man threw down literature, cursed and displayed what members thought was a real gun, but turned out to be a BB gun.
The man was later found walking along County Road 75W and told police he was suicidal and was on his way to Indianapolis. He was later taken to a hospital, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
The man entered Liberty Tabernacle Church, located at 6177 N. County Road 75W, near Whiteland, just a few minutes before their 10 a.m. service Sunday. The man refused to take his hat off when asked by other parishioners and then became disgruntled, cursing at people, throwing brochures on the ground and lifting his shirt to show the BB gun in a holster.
Members of the church initially thought the man was showing a real gun, but police later identified it as a BB gun. The man also had a knife and flashlight/stun gun tool, according to the report.
The man told police he suffered from several mental illnesses.
