A southside doctor who has treated cancer patients for more than two decades is being honored for her compassion.

Dr. Mary Lou Mayer received the Healing Hands Award on Friday from Franciscan St. Francis Health. The award recognizes one doctor every four months for showing excellent clinical skills, patient relations, research, stewardship and reflecting of the hospital’s mission, according to a news release from St. Francis Health.

“In oncology, we celebrate our survivorship and guide our patients and families through all aspects of treatment,” nurse Angela May said in the news release. “At the most difficult times in a disease process, when a physician determines a customized plan of care, Dr. Mayer relays options with the kind of honesty I would want from my physician.”

Mayer is a hematologist and oncologist with the hospital and received her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. She is board-certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology.

She received the award Friday with family and members of her practice.
