One person was taken to a hospital and 25 people were arrested at an underage drinking party in a Center Grove area neighborhood.
The teens had blood alcohol contents ranging from 0.02 percent to 0.12 percent, and one teenager was taken to Community Hospital South when he was found unconscious in the home late Friday. Police later met with the teen and his parents at the hospital, where he was recovering.
Nine people ages 18, 19 or 20 were arrested for possession and consumption of alcohol as a minor at the party. Police arrested a 10th man who was riding in a vehicle leaving the area and told police he was at the party earlier, according to police reports.
Fourteen juveniles were caught drinking, arrested and sent home with their parents, Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox said.
The teen who hosted the party, Austin Lohman, 18, was arrested on a felony charge of residential entry because he did not have permission to be at the house where his mother and stepfather live.
Lohman’s stepfather called police late Friday and told them that he thought his stepson had broken into the house in the 4800 block of Brentridge Parkway. Lohman hadn’t lived at the house for about four years and the homeowner told police he suspected that Lohman was having a drinking party at the home.
He had been alerted by a neighbor.
“I’m pretty proud of the neighbors that called the homeowner that was out of town. We don’t always get that help. It’s a tough thing to do to a son or stepson and we appreciate them calling to let us know about it,” Cox said.
“We like that type of cooperation obviously because at that underage drinking party we found an unconscious youth. And you don’t want to miss parties like that and have that child not wake up the next morning because the other kids didn’t get them the care they need,” Cox said.
Several Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputies surrounded the house. When they knocked on the door, several people tried to run out of the back door but were stopped by police. The people inside the house also closed the garage door, which was partially open, when police told them to raise it.
Lohman came out of the house and told deputies that he stayed at the house off and on and had permission to be there. A deputy called his stepfather again, and his mother, and both said Lohman did not live at the house and did not have permission to be there.
Lohman told sheriff’s deputies that he attends Franklin Central High School on the southside of Indianapolis and that he wanted to have the party at his mother’s house because it was close to Center Grove High School. The Franklin Central boys basketball team had played a game at Center Grove on Friday night.
Deputies arrested the nine adults and called the parents of the 14 juveniles, according to a police report. Officers also smelled burnt marijuana in the house and recovered drug paraphernalia from the garage.
A deputy also stopped a vehicle being driven by a 17-year-old girl at 1 a.m. near county roads 1100N and 500W. She told police she had picked up her friend’s boyfriend, 18-year-old Michael Thomas, from the party. Police gave Thomas a breath test, which registered 0.09 percent, and arrested him, too, according to a police report.
