Sheriff: Alcohol a factor in fatal crash

Officials believe alcohol may be to blame for a crash that took the life of a Bargersville man this weekend on the west side of the county.

Robert T. Shirley, 42, of Bargersville, was pronounced dead at the scene after his pickup truck was struck head on while he was traveling east on Division Road, west of State Road 135. He was heading to work in Indianapolis, according to a news release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Deputies believe the other driver, Tina Marie Isley, 48, of Morgantown, was traveling west on Division Road when she crossed the center line and struck Shirley’s truck head on. Isley was driving a Jeep Wrangler, the news release said.

Isley was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with a possible fractured ankle, according to the news release.

"Alcohol is believed to have played a role in the accident. Investigators are awaiting toxicology results," Sheriff Duane Burgess said in the news release. "The sheriff’s office has already been in contact with a member of the prosecutor’s office to update them on the situation."

The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will decide what, if any, charges to file.
