Donald Eugene “Don” Smith
Donald Eugene “Don” Smith, 85, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013, at his residence at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin. He was a former longtime resident of New Whiteland.
He was born May 14, 1928, in
Sullivan County to Laota Isom “Otia” Smith and Gracie Gladys (Henderson) Smith. He married Audra Mae (Wortinger) Smith on Nov. 23, 1947. She preceded him in passing on Jan. 15, 2006.
Survivors include two children, Debi (Jerry) Slevin and Mike (Deana) Smith; four grandchildren, Rob (Jenny) Flodder, Andy (Amy) Slevin, Ben (Heather) Smith and Megan (Tom) Wheeler; 13 great-grandchildren, Josh, Danielle, Jessie, Lauren, Leah, Rebecca, Emma, Bryn, Aspen, Hunter, Leilani, Zeb and Wes; four great-great-grandchildren, Cadence, Payton, Kaylee and Eli; and former spouse, Emily Smith.
He was preceded in passing by his parents; and his wife, Audra.
Don attended Dugger Union High School. He was employed by Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors Corp. as an experimental parts inspector, retiring after 29 years of service. He also was a real estate agent and broker in the New Whiteland area for many years, working at Don Smith Realty and Ed Perkins Realty.
He was a former longtime member of New Whiteland Christian Church and was a member of Franklin Memorial Christian Church. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, with his latest membership with Jubilee Lodge No. 746, F&AM in Whiteland. He was a devoted Democrat. He enjoyed playing golf.
The Rev. Larry McAdams will conduct a service at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Indiana Masonic Home, Ransford Chapel, 690 S. State Street, Franklin. Friends may call on from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin is handling arrangements.
