Frederick Alfred McWhirt, 80, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Whiteland.

Fred was born Oct. 23, 1932, in Gas City, to Charles A. and Anne L. (Blackburn) McWhirt.

He was a security guard for 16 years with Southern Regional Medical Center in Georgia.

He enjoyed bowling, bingo, old cars and playing guitar. He was an Indianapolis Colts football and NASCAR fan. He was an amateur boxer.

Survivors include four children, Amy (Kevin) Mitchell of Indianapolis, Karen Kelley of Greenwood, Lisa (Glen) Blackburn of Marion and Laura Grabow of Converse; a brother, Charles McWhirt Jr. of Florida; eight grandchildren, Christy (Edward) Lacny of Whiteland, Bethany (Brian) Betts and Shannon Porter, both of Greenwood, Jason Porter of Indianapolis, Jennifer (Bill) Geiser of South Carolina, Craig Weller of Kokomo, Scott Kelley of Martinsville and Elizabeth Blackburn of Marion; three stepgrandchildren, Scott Blackburn and Nick Blackburn, both of Marion, and Philip Mitchell of Indianapolis; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maxine (Hawks) McWhirt; nine siblings; and a stepdaughter, Kathleen Manculich.

A funeral service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Saturday at Jessen Funeral Home, Whiteland Chapel, 729 U.S. 31 North. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Park in Jonesboro, Ga.
