William George Zimmer, 89, passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2012. He was a longtime Greenwood resident. To many, he was simply known as “Zim.”
He was born June 28, 1923, to William George and Nina (O’Keefe) Zimmer. He attended Horace Mann High School in Gary and later Indiana University.
Bill married Martha Jane McCarty on Aug. 15, 1945, in Greenwood, celebrating their 67th anniversary this year. She survives.
Other survivors include one son, David McCarty Zimmer; three grandchildren, Brian (Jessica), Geoffry and Nicole (Daryl); and three great-grandchildren, Draven, Kylee, and Quinten.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sons, two at birth, and Jack Hughes Zimmer and William Gary Zimmer; and a sister, June Stinson.
Bill was employed by Van Waters and Rogers for 25 years in chemical distribution sales, retiring in 1989. He also co-owned Village Shoppes on Madison Avenue in Greenwood and helped his son with the farmers market.
He was a member of Mount Auburn United Methodist Church and a former member of Community Church of Greenwood.
Bill was very active in the community. Over the years, he was involved with the Greater Greenwood Chamber of Commerce and had served as a member of the Greenwood Planning Commission and the Greenwood Jaycees. He even helped with the startup of the Greenwood Little League.
He was a member of Greenwood Masonic Lodge 514 F&AM, of which he received his 50-Year Award; Indianapolis Valley of the Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine.
He was quite a musician and played the saxophone, clarinet and the flute. He had played in dance bands in Bloomington and Chicago. He also participated in many church choirs.
The Rev. J. Wesley Hertel will officiate a memorial service at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main St. Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 510 N. New Jersey St., Indianapolis, IN 46204; or to the Masonic Home Foundation, 525 N. Illinois St, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
