Joseph Dean Cummings
 

Joseph Dean Cummings, age 65, passed away on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at Reid Hospital in Richmond. He was a resident of Franklin.

He was born on Jan. 19, 1947, in Decatur, to Paul and Mary Frances (Chester) Cummings.

He is survived by brother, Thomas Cummings (Margaret) of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Mary Cummings of Franklin; brother, William Cummings (Susan) of Franklin; Carol Blackwell of Bargersville and Julia Kemp (Bob) of Franklin; 19 nieces and nephews; 45 great nieces and great nephews and one great-great on the way and special friends, Linda Jo Cummings, Jo Winters and Frances and Paul Chandler.

He was preceded in passing by his parents, Paul and Mary and brother, Jim Cummings.

Joe was a 1965 graduate of Franklin High School. He attended Franklin College.

Joe served honorably in the U.S. Navy from April 1966 to February 1970. He was a marine combat medic who received a purple heart, navy comp., meritorious service combat action ribbon and a presidential unit citation medal

He was employed as manager at Hardin Oil in Franklin for many years. Later he worked at the Franklin Dairy Queen for several years.

He enjoyed dog sitting for his brother and sisters and nieces and nephews and friends. He truly enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 North Morton Street, (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted Wednesday following the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Johnson County and/or to any Veterans Association of the donors’ choice.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Ambassador Healthcare in Centerville and Reid Hospital in Richmond for the excellent care and kindness they provided to Joe.
