Mary “Frances” Melton, 91, passed away at the Franklin United Methodist Community in Franklin.
She was born Sept. 12, 1921, to Chalmer and Gertrude Melton.
Frances was a 1939 graduate of Franklin High School. After graduation, she worked for a local factory. She also worked at the Franklin license branch and later ran for recorder of Johnson County. She was elected and held that position for eight years. She later ran and was elected clerk of the courts for Johnson County. She also held that office for eight years. She later worked at the Indiana Statehouse before retiring in 1990.
Frances was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church of Franklin, where she served terms as a deacon and elder.
She was a 50-year member of the Franklin Chapter 439 of Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a past worthy matron. She also was a member of the Franklin American Legion Post 205 Ladies Auxiliary; a past member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority; and a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Johnson County Republicans.
Frances was preceded in passing by her parents.
She is survived by longtime friend, Henrietta Herron of Lapel.
The Rev. Peter Jessen will conduct a service at 10 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, 100 E. Madison St., Franklin. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St. (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. An Order of the Eastern Star service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home by Franklin Chapter 439. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
