A landmark water tower that’s loomed over Greenwood for decades soon will vanish from the landscape.

Demolition of the Valle Vista water tower is set to begin next week. But don’t expect a controlled explosion that attracts hordes of gawkers, such as when the RCA Dome came down in Indianapolis. Workers will take apart the tower piece by piece over the course of about a day, deputy mayor Terry McLaughlin said.

The tower hasn’t been used to hold water for more than five years, and Greenwood wants to raze it because it can spook pilots flying into the nearby Greenwood Municipal Airport, especially those flying in for the first time.
