Boys basketball

Warriors claim tourney title

Brennan Neal poured in a game-high 22 points and Whiteland used a sizable advantage at the foul line to defeat East Central, 54-44, to win the South Ripley tournament title on Saturday.

Riley Higdon added 11 points for the Warriors (4-5), including seven of the team’s 19 free throws. Whiteland’s defense yielded a total of just 11 points in the second and third quarters.

Braves repeat at Monrovia

Jared DeHart scored 28 points and Trevor Ankney added 18 as Indian Creek successfully defended its title at the Monrovia Holiday Classic with a 57-54 win over the host Bulldogs on Saturday night.

Jace Russell pulled down nine rebounds for the Braves (7-3).

In the third-place game, Kegan Owen scored 17 points and Champ McCorkle added 15 in Greenwood Christian’s 66-52 victory over Brown County. The Cougars improved to 5-5 with the win.

Girls basketball

Grizzly Cubs finish second

Host Franklin placed second at the Walt Raines Classic on Saturday, edging Indian Creek 62-58 in the first round before falling to Class 4A No. 12 Brownsburg in the title game.

Bayleigh Torrance paced the Grizzly Cubs (7-8) with 15 points in the win over the Braves, while Hailee Robbins added 11. Peyton Wilson had a team-high 10 points in defeat against Brownsburg.

Indian Creek (9-8) bounced back with a 63-57 win over Batesville in the third-place game.

Swimming

Trojans compete in Bloomington

Center Grove’s girls placed third at the Bloomington South Holiday Invitational on Saturday. The Trojans scored 546 points, finishing behind Hamilton Southeastern and the host Panthers.

In the boys meet, Center Grove was fourth out of six teams, scoring 467.5 points.

Wrestling

Trojans fourth in major tourney

Facing a loaded field, Center Grove finished fourth out of 32 teams at the prestigious Al Smith Invitational in Mishawaka.

The Trojans wound up with 157 points, trailing only Cathedral, Chesterton and Columbus East in the team standings. It was their second-best showing in 10 appearances at the event.

Gleason Mappes, ranked first in the state at 160 pounds, won his weight class with a perfect 5-0 record. Alex Petro and Jonah Hays finished second at 113 and 170 pounds, respectively, while Peyton Pruett (145) and Shane Stits (195) each placed fourth.

Franklin College

Men’s basketball loses at Wabash

Despite 15 points and 11 boards from freshman Danny Goggans, Franklin College fell short in a Saturday trip to Wabash College, 74-66.

John Beineke and Sam Gutierrez added 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Grizzlies (2-9).

Women’s basketball falls in Ohio

Franklin College got off to a hot shooting start but couldn’t keep it going in a 71-63 loss to Denison at the Capital Holiday Tournament in Columbus, Ohio.

Bayleigh Walker scored a game-high 23 points for the Grizzlies (3-7), earning a spot on the all-tournament team.
