Community Health will require employees to be vaccinated

A central Indiana health care network will require all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Community Health Network, a not-for-profit group of hospitals that includes Community Hospital South on the county line, rehab centers and doctors offices, will require all 16,000 of its employees to get the vaccine.

Employees have been eligible to get the vaccine since December, and 60% already have, according to a news release.

This is an effort to create a safer environment for patients, said Dr. Ram Yeleti, chief physician executive for Community Health Network.

“The evidence is clearer every day that those who are vaccinated very rarely pass the virus to others,” Yeleti said. “We have an obligation to the patients who put their health in our hands to create the safest environment possible.”

The company will allow religious exemptions for the COVID-19 vaccine, just as it does for the flu vaccine.

Contractors, vendors and volunteers at Community’s more than 200 sites will also be required to be vaccinated.

All employees are expected to be fully vaccinated by Sept. 15, the news release said.

The health network has sites across central Indiana, with several located in Greenwood.
