Franklin College

Women’s swimming defends title

Franklin College’s women concluded their season by wiping out the field at the HCAC Championships, which concluded in Terre Haute on Sunday evening.

The Grizzlies totaled 879 points, well ahead of the next two teams combined. The Franklin men finished a close second to Rose-Hulman, 732-728, after the Engineers won the decisive 400-yard freestyle relay.

Franklin dominated all three days of the women’s competition, taking 17 of 20 events overall and all seven on Sunday. The Grizzlies swept all five weekend relays and got individual wins from Brynna Sentel (100, 200 and 500 freestyle), August Hartzell (100 and 200 breaststroke, 400 IM), Caileigh McCafferty (100 and 200 backstroke), Liz Colliver (100 butterfly), Samantha Phillips (200 butterfly) and Allyson Carroll (1,650 freestyle).

Franklin’s men claimed the 400 medley relay and got individual victories from Charlie Hall (200 fly, 200 and 400 IM), Jack Burke (100 and 200 backstroke), Gauge Creech (1- and 3-meter diving), Dylan Harker (100 breast) and Kosmo Wojack (200 breast).

Men’s basketball into HCAC title game

Payton Mills led the way with 20 points and 11 rebounds as Franklin College posted a 78-73 victory at Manchester in the semifinal round of the HCAC tournament. Danny Goggans and Nathan Webb added 15 and 14 points, respectively, off the bench for the Grizzlies (8-6), who play in the championship game at Transylvania on Wednesday evening.

Baseball manages twinbill splits

Nick McClanahan struck out 12 batters, the most by a Franklin College pitcher in five years, to lead the way to a 13-3 victory in the back end of a doubleheader against Manchester on Saturday. The Grizzlies had lost the opener, 12-7.

Quenton Wellington drove in five runs on the day, including a bases-loaded triple in the nightcap, for the Grizzlies (1-1). Ryan Bixler contributed four hits and Nick Wright added a home run.

Franklin salvaged another split with Defiance on Sunday, rolling in the second game, 14-1, after losing the first, 9-8.

Softball splits doubleheader

Sydney Bostic went 4 for 6 and knocked in five runs as Franklin College split a pair of games against Alma. The Grizzlies (3-1) won the opener, 10-3, behind three Bostic RBIs and a complete game from Alisha Burch but dropped the second game, 7-3.

Men’s golf places second

Franklin College turned in back-to-back scores of 313 to come in second at the Battle of Balterra, which wrapped up Sunday in Florence. Brock Tennyson and Alan Showalter paced the Grizzlies with two-day scores of 154 and 155, respectively.

Men’s soccer drops road match

Franklin College was limited to one shot on goal in a 2-0 loss at Defiance. The Grizzlies fall to 0-2 on the young season.
