Indy man arrested after early morning chase

An Indianapolis man led police on a lengthy car chase that ended when he crashed into a fence early Friday at the Franklin Energizer warehouse.

Dontea Donshore McCants, 22, was arrested on charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, a Level 6 felony, as well as resisting law enforcement, reckless driving and criminal mischief, all misdemeanors.

At the time of his arrest in Johnson County, he was also wanted on an out-of-county warrant for violating probation stemming from a Marion County auto theft case.

At 3:04 a.m., a Greenwood police officer observed McCants run a red light at U.S. 31 and Worthsville Road at a high rate of speed, said Matt Fillenwarth, assistant police chief.

The officer attempted a traffic stop, but McCants kept going, Fillenwarth said.

Greenwood police, joined later by Johnson County sheriff’s deputies, New Whiteland, Whiteland and Franklin police, chased McCants down U.S. 31, Fillenwarth said

McCants eventually turned onto Paul Hand Blvd. in Whiteland, where he went over the rough railroad tracks at 70 mph, he said.

The chase wound up on county roads, with several attempts to deploy stop sticks at Earlywood Drive, County Road 300 North, Hurricane Road and State Road 44, Fillenwarth said. McCants evaded at least one set of stop sticks, but hit them at State Road 44 and Jim Black Road, he said.

Soon after, McCants crossed State Road 44 and went through a grassy median on Bertram Parkway, next to Energizer. He came to a stop after he crashed into a chainlink fence, Fillenwarth said.

He then fled a short distance on foot, but gave up when a police K-9 joined the pursuit, he said.

No officers were injured in the chase, but a Greenwood police car was damaged, likely due to how fast it was going when it went over the railroad tracks, Fillenwarth said.

McCants was taken to the Johnson County jail where he is held without bond.
