Edinburgh boys upset in sectional semifinal

CAMPBELLSBURG

When Edinburgh’s Caleb Dewey knocked down a game-tying 3-pointer with two minutes remaining in Friday night’s Class A sectional semifinal, few would have guessed that would end up being the Lancers’ final basket of the season.

But cold shooting doomed Edinburgh in the fourth quarter and Trinity Lutheran scored the game’s last nine points to snatch a 72-63 upset win at West Washington.

The Lancers (18-6) hit just three of 16 shots from the field in the last eight minutes.

"We had our looks; we had our shots," Edinburgh coach Keith Witty said, "and we didn’t make our shots."

On the strength of a dominating second quarter, the Lancers led by eight at halftime and remained on top through three, 52-43. But the Cougars owned the fourth, outscoring Edinburgh by a 29-11 margin.

For the Lancers, who only turned the ball over five times all game, it really was as simple as shots not falling when they had to.

"We did a good job for three and a half quarters," Witty said.

Trinity Lutheran coach Ryan Crasc felt that switching to a 1-3-1 trap defense in the fourth enabled his team to speed the Lancers up and create some transition opportunities.

Edinburgh — which enjoyed the biggest season-to-season turnaround of any boys team in the state this year — was led by 17 points and 11 rebounds from Travis Jones. Dewey added 14 points, followed by Noah Detling with 12, Isaac Roberts with nine and Landen Burton with seven.
