College notebook: Shepherd leads Duke golf to win

Duke golfer Erica Shepherd took individual medalist honors to help the Blue Devils place first at the 18-team Gamecock Intercollegiate in Columbia, South Carolina. Shepherd, a Center Grove graduate, finished with a 7-under par score of 69-70-70—209.

Center Grove

Northwestern softball won all six of its games in Leesburg, Florida. Junior catcher Jordyn Rudd did her part, totaling five hits, five runs batted in and two runs scored.

Wisconsin went 3-3 against Big Ten foes in Florida, with sophomore first baseman/pitcher Abby Herbst delivering a total of three hits, including an RBI double, and pitching 5 1/3 innings. Herbst picked up the save in a 4-2 defeat of Penn State, permitting no hits in three frames.

Senior outfielder Hanna Burris had a single, run and stole a base for UIndy in its season-opening 6-0 victory over Trevecca Nazarene. Pinch hitter Piper Belden scored a run for the Greyhounds.

Morehead State freshman Grant Herron pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win in the team’s 5-2 victory at No. 1 Louisville. Herron allowed two hits, walked three batters and struck out five.

UIndy baseball lost three home games to Northwood, with senior catcher Will Smithey finishing the series with a double and three runs driven in. Freshman pitcher Josh Johnson worked a total of three innings of relief for the Greyhounds.

Indiana Wesleyan senior Tye Thixton had five hits and five RBIs in a four-game baseball sweep of IU South Bend. Thixton nearly hit for the cycle in the finale with a single, double and triple in a 3-0 decision. Thixton added two hits, two runs and five RBIs in a twinbill sweep of Cleary.

Freshman Bayleigh Riddle scored the first goal of her college lacrosse career, finding the back of the net in the first half for Franklin College in its 10-9 home loss to Benedictine. Taylor linebacker Sam Bolin had three tackles, forced a fumble and broke up a pass in the football team’s 37-13 loss to Marian.

UIndy junior wrestler Gleason Mappes received an at-large invitation to the NCAA Division II championships in the 184-pound weight class. The meet will be held March 12-13 in St. Louis.

Indiana forward Trayce Jackson-Davis finished with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists in the Hoosiers’ 73-57 loss to Michigan. He had nine points, seven rebounds and three steals in a 64-58 loss at Michigan State.

Sophomore guard Spencer Piercefield produced nine points, two rebounds and two assists in Indiana Wesleyan’s 106-79 loss to St. Francis in a semifinal of the Crossroads League men’s basketball tournament.

Louisville freshman Kiyah Yeast placed 16th in the 60-meter dash at the ACC indoor track and field meet in a time of 7.76 seconds. Yeast was also part of the fifth-place 4×400 relay.

Ashley Eck had seven digs for Indiana State volleyball in a five-set win at Northern Iowa. The Sycamores lost the second match, 3-1, with Eck recording 10 digs and three assists.

Denver senior Macy Carrabine helped the Pioneers twice down Oral Roberts, finishing both matches with 17 digs and two assists.

Whiteland

Morehead State pitcher Luke Helton pitched the first six of 11 innings in his team’s 3-1 victory at Ohio. Helton allowed four hits and struck out nine Bobcats without issuing a walk.

Addie Csikos had a single for Franklin College softball as it opened the season with a 5-1 victory at Centre. In the second game of the doubleheader, freshman pitcher Delanie Gourley went the distance, allowing three hits and striking out three in a 14-0 win.

Indiana Wesleyan senior Danielle Munn pitched two innings of one-hit relief, striking out three in a 6-0 win over Midway in Westfield. She also picked up the win in a 2-1 victory over St. Thomas, permitting four hits and striking out four.

FRANKLIN

Taylor golfer Javan Johnson helped the Spartans to a seventh-place finish at the Oldfield Classic in South Carolina, shooting 74-71-74—219 and tying for seventh individually.

Concordia (Wisconsin) junior tennis player Logan Snyder won both his singles and doubles matches in the team’s 7-2 victory over Carroll.

Freshman tight end Drew Byerly made three catches for 38 yards for the Marian football squad as it handed Taylor a 37-13 loss. Byerly was also credited with a tackle.

Senior Abby Sewell had five kills and three digs for the Franklin College volleyball as it lost in three sets at Mount St. Joseph in a semifinal match of the HCAC tournament.

Lipscomb freshman setter Brooke Phillips had 40 assists and 11 digs in a 3-0 sweep of Bellarmine. In the second match, also a Bison victory, Phillips contributed 40 assists and six digs. Lipscomb won two matches at North Alabama as Phillips totaled 56 assists and 10 digs.

Sophomore Bayleigh Torrance had 10 points and three steals off the bench for Franklin College in 57-54 loss to Mount St. Joseph in the quarterfinals of the HCAC women’s basketball tournament.

Greenwood

Jeffrey Reynolds helped St. Francis stun top-ranked Indiana Wesleyan, 106-79, in a semifinal of the Crossroads League men’s basketball tournament, scoring 14 points and blocking two shots. The Cougars lost to Marian in the title game, 86-71, with Reynolds adding two points and a rebound.

Taylor outfielder T.J. Bass drove had four hits, five RBIs and three runs scored in the baseball team’s four-game sweep of Indiana Tech.

Roncalli

Indiana freshman pitcher Amber Linton, a Franklin resident, picked up the win in a 5-4 defeat of Wisconsin in Leesburg, Florida. Linton closed the trip south with a victory against the Golden Gophers, allowing one hit in four innings.
