States expands eligibility to age 55, opens mass vaccination clinics

Hoosiers aged 55 to 59 can now get a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Indiana State Department of Health on Tuesday expanded eligibility and announced a partnership for three mass vaccination clinics at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, University of Notre Dame and the Sellersburg campus of Ivy Tech Community College.

Each of the mass vaccination clinics will offer the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which received its emergency-use authorization Saturday from the Food and Drug Administration.

The vaccine, unlike its counterparts, requires just one dose.

“The Johnson & Johnson vaccine gives eligible Hoosiers a safe, effective and convenient way to protect themselves from COVID-19,” State Health Commissioner Kristina Box said in a statement. “Because it requires just one dose, every shot administered represents a Hoosier who can rest easier, knowing their risk of severe illness from this disease has dropped exponentially.”

The state health department is also planning for a future mass vaccination clinic in Gary. Additional mass vaccination sites will be added as more vaccine becomes available, officials said.

Locally, there is no information about how many Johnson & Johnson doses will be available or when they will begin arriving, said Betsy Swearingen, director of the Johnson County Health Department.

For now, the county health department and Johnson Memorial Health will keep offering Moderna and Pfizer vaccinations at Johnson Memorial Hospital. Other vaccination sites in the county are Adult and Child Primary Care in Franklin, Windrose Health in Edinburgh, Kroger stores, some Walmart stores and the Greenwood Sam’s Club.

Hoosiers may be vaccinated at any clinic in the state. If there is not a vaccination appointment available locally, residents who are willing may travel outside the county or to one of the mass vaccination clinics.

All vaccinations are by appointment only. Eligible Hoosiers may register online at ourshot.in.gov or call 211. Registration help is available through the Johnson County Public Library, AARP or the local Area 8 agency.

Proof of age and state residency is required.

Eligibility now includes all Hoosiers 55 and older, first responders and health care workers.
[sc:pullout-title pullout-title="If you go" ][sc:pullout-text-begin]
Here is a look at upcoming mass vaccination clinics:

Indianapolis Motor Speedway

When: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. March 5-7

Where: 4790 W. 16th St., Indianapolis

Additional information: Enter through main gate on 16th Street; participants will remain in their cars for their vaccines.

Ivy Tech Community College

When: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. March 12-13

Where: 8204 County Road 311, Sellersburg

Additional information: Participants will remain in their cars for vaccines.

University of Notre Dame, Compton Family Ice Arena

When: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. March 26-27

Where: 100 Compton Family Ice Arena, Notre Dame
[sc:pullout-text-end][sc:pullout-title pullout-title="If you go" ][sc:pullout-text-begin]
Here is a look at where you can get a vaccine in the county if you meet the criteria:

Johnson Memorial Hospital

When: Vaccines available 8 a.m. to 3:50 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturdays.

Where: Old emergency wing, 1125 W Jefferson St, Franklin.
