Traffic Alert: Local work starting to prepare for I-69 construction

Contractors hired by the Indiana Department of Transportation will begin prep work this week on Interstate 69 in Johnson County.

Travis Road is expected to close on Thursday at State Road 37 as a safety measure due to the intersection’s close proximity to the northern traffic crossover for work on mainline I-69 in Martinsville, according to an INDOT news release. Travis Road will eventually flow into a future access road along the east side of I-69, according to construction plans.

This week’s closure is in preparation for a big traffic change on State Road 37 north of Martinsville as soon as this Saturday. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction and shift to the northbound side of the highway from Morgan Street to State Road 144. The State Road 37 restrictions will be in place for most of this year, INDOT says.

Ennis Road is also expected to close at State Road 37 on Saturday for the first phase of I-69 lane construction. The local detour follows New Harmony, Egbert and Henderson Ford roads to access State Road 37, according to INDOT.

Next week, after State Road 37 traffic is shifted between State Road 144 and Martinsville, motorists can expect to see pavement and bridge removal in the old southbound lanes, INDOT says.

Huggin Hollow Road is expected to close just north of Banta Road on or after Jan. 26. The road is being realigned to connect with Waverly Park Road, just south of the State Road 144 and Old State Road 37 intersection, according to INDOT.

Also on Jan. 26, crews are expected to remove overhead utility lines that cross State Road 37 at Stones Crossing Road. Motorists could see rolling stops for State Road 37 traffic lasting up to 20 minutes, INDOT says.

Motorists should also stay alert for lane closures and flaggers on city streets near State Road 37 in Marion County, including Banta, Southport and Wicker roads. Crews are installing new utility lines and collecting soil samples to prepare for future I-69 construction.
