Lowe’s expansion to bring 100 jobs to Greenwood

Lowe’s plans to expand its home delivery systems in Indiana by way of a Greenwood warehouse.

The North Carolina-based home improvement retailer will lease a warehouse to serve as a cross-dock delivery terminal for quicker delivery of bulky items such as appliances, riding mowers, grills and patio furniture, said Steve Salazar, a Lowe’s spokesperson.

The 92,000-square foot facility, part of a 156,000-square-foot shell building on Main Street near Graham Road, just east of Interstate 65, will bring 100 new jobs to the area.

Lowe’s will lease a portion of the warehouse built by Illinois-based developer Verus Partners. The developer in 2018 received a $1.2 million tax break from the city to build the $6.2 million warehouse. The remaining 64,000 square feet has yet to be leased, according to the property listing online.

The space will enable Lowe’s to provide faster and more predictable delivery to customers in Indiana as it continues to grow its distribution network in light of many consumers resorting to more online shopping during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. It will allow for next-day deliveries of more products, Salazar said.

The new facility is part of a $1.7 billion expansion to the company’s supply chain to improve distribution of its products across the country by 2023, Salazar said.

"Providing customers more ways to shop has never been more important, and today’s update on the progress made in our supply chain transformation highlights our ongoing and unyielding commitment to enhancing the customer experience in this new era," said Don Frieson, Lowe’s executive vice president of supply chain, in a written statement.

The City of Greenwood had no involvement in bringing the Lowe’s warehouse to the city. Mayor Mark Myers knew about the new warehouse, but the property was already zoned for industrial development, and the company did not ask for any incentives, he said.

"Because it’s a major retail brand, we know that they’ll be good and solid and they’ll be here for a good while. So, that’s good to know," Myers said.

Lowe’s expects to begin operations in Greenwood by the end of the year, Salazar said.
