County’s employment rate improves slightly in August

The county’s unemployment rate continues to rebound from its 21st Century high of 13.6% in April.

The county’s jobless rate shrank to 5.2% in August from 6.3% in July, although the rate is still almost twice what it was in March, before the coronavirus pandemic took hold.

Of 92 Indiana counties, just 33 counties had lower unemployment rates than Johnson County in August. The county’s jobless rate is also lower than the state’s rate of 6.5%.

Still, local job statistics show a stark contrast to last August, when just 2.7% of the county’s residents were unemployed.

Overall, more than 79,500 Johnson County residents had jobs last month, compared to slightly less than 4,400 members of the eligible workforce who did not.

The data comes from a monthly report released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, which tracks unemployment.

For the third consecutive month, Daviess County in southwestern Indiana had the lowest unemployment rate at 3.5%, while Lake County, in northwest Indiana, had the highest rate at 9.4%.
