KYB out $80K due to fraudulent email

A hacked email account cost KYB Americas Corp. more than $81,000.

The loss stems from an email appearing to have been sent by an employee at KYB’s car part manufacturing plant in Franklin, which the company believes is the result of a hacking, according to a Franklin Police Department report.

KYB’s attorney told police fraudulent emails were sent to at least two clients claiming that the company’s bank account information had changed, which prompted one client to send money to a bank account not associated with KYB, the report said.

That client sent the money to a Chase Bank account attached to the email, but not to KYB, according to the report.

Police reached out to Chase Bank for information about the fraudulent account, but the bank referred them to its security department, the report said.

No arrest has been made and the case is still under investigation.
