The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting incident involving an off-duty Edinburgh police officer who discharged his weapon at home, injuring his wife, Edinburgh Police Chief Doyne Little said.
Edinburgh Police and Fire Departments responded around 5:10 p.m. Wednesday to the 400 block of Prosser Drive, where they found a 33-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her leg, according to a news release from the Edinburgh Police Department.
The woman is in stable condition at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, according to the news release.
The officer has not been arrested and is not facing any disciplinary action, but will need to complete additional training, Little said.
All Edinburgh police officers are required to complete 40 hours of training, as well as training by a local officer who is certified by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, he said.
The investigation is ongoing, but the incident appears to have been an accidental shooting, said Damian Katt, investigations division commander at the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators interviewed several witnesses and believe the officer, who has three years of experience, did not know there was a round in the chamber, Katt said.
The officer was cleaning a personal gun when it fired, the news release said.
Officers are trained to be careful when cleaning their weapons and ensure the gun is not loaded, Little said.
“Unfortunately it happens. We are trained to check the weapon. Apparently he must have missed that,” he said.
