Franklin man arrested after crashing into squad car

A Franklin man is in jail after he crashed his car into a sheriff’s deputy’s patrol car that was parked directly in front of him.

Ashton Bradan Okes, 21, was arrested on a felony charge of resisting law enforcement and two misdemeanors for operating under the influence and reckless driving.

Just before midnight Thursday, sheriff’s deputies located a car parked in the 6600 block of E. Greensburg Road because a car had its lights on for more than 10 minutes. After a deputy approached the vehicle, he saw Okes slumped over the center console of the car, and saw liquor bottles in the rear passenger side floorboard, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies attempted to wake up Okes several times. When he woke up, he tried to put the car in drive while revving the engine. A deputy parked a patrol car in front of Okes’s car to prevent a pursuit. Although the deputies warned Okes not to drive the car, he did, immediately crashing into the patrol vehicle in front of him and damaging its bumper, according to the report.

As Okes continued to try and leave the scene, one of the deputies broke the driver’s side window and arrested him. Deputies continued to try and interview Okes, who slurred his words, repeatedly apologizing and swearing at them. Okes was barely able to stand when he was taken to the patrol car, the report said.

Okes was taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital for a blood draw. He also took a horizontal gaze test, and he struggled with smooth pursuit, according to the report.

Okes, of 10 Carrollwood Court, is being held at the Johnson County jail on $3,000 bond.
