Boys basketball

Trojans throttle Artesians

Center Grove got into the win column in emphatic fashion Saturday, posting a dominating 79-29 road win over Martinsville.

Tayven Jackson and Leyton McGovern scored 15 points each to lead the Trojans (1-2), while Charlie Bemis added 12 on four 3-pointers. Tyler Cerny finished with 10 points and Landin Hacker had nine.

Cougars top Saints

Styles McCorkle scored 15 points and Noah Harris threw in 14 as Class A No. 4 Greenwood Christian defeated Indianapolis Lutheran on Saturday, 64-44, to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Swimming and diving

Oliver, Martin compete at nationals

Franklin junior Cade Oliver swam a personal-best 1:45.28 to win the 200-yard backstroke ‘C’ final Saturday at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships East in Atlanta. Oliver wound up placing 17th but posted the sixth-fastest time at the meet.

Center Grove’s Ethan Martin also reached a ‘C’ final on Saturday, finishing 21st in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.28 seconds.

Oliver missed advancing in both the 100 backstroke and 400 individual medley by a hundredth of a second, finishing 25th in each. He was also 74th in the 200 individual medley.

Martin tied for 75th in the 50 freestyle at 21.20 seconds. 

Wrestling

Warriors win Columbus invite

Whiteland swept its five dual meets to take first place at the Columbus North Invitational on Saturday. The Warriors defeated Carmel, New Albany, Brown County, Bloomington North and the host Bull Dogs.

Andre Merritt was 5-0 at 138 pounds for Whiteland, which also got perfect days from Jason Savin at 160, Vincent Tinoco at 170 and Jakarrey Oliver at 220. Elijah Brooks (113 pounds), Joey Buttler (120) and Gilbert Tinoco (182) each went 4-1.

Trojans compete at Zionsville

Center Grove placed fourth in the Eagle Invitational at Zionsville on Saturday, with several outstanding individual performances. Hyatt Yeager (113 pounds), Hayden Watson (132) and Drake Buchanan (182) won their respective weight classes, while Michael LaRocca (120) and Sam Hesser (170) finished second.

Franklin College

Men’s basketball routs Earlham

Franklin College hit 11 3-pointers and had six players score in double figures during an 82-63 home win over Earlham on Saturday.

Matt Krause had 18 points to lead the Grizzlies (5-4, 2-1 HCAC), followed closely by Sam Gutierrez (14 points) and Borden Kennedy (13). Kale Morris and Payton Mills contributed 11 points apiece and Jordan Anderson chipped in 10.

Women’s basketball tops Quakers

Bayleigh Walker scored 18 points and Franklin College forced a season-high 26 turnovers on the way to a 64-55 home victory over Earlham on Saturday. Destinee Cross added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Grizzlies (4-2, 2-1 HCAC), with seven of those boards coming on the offensive end.
