Edinburgh man leads police on chase

An Edinburgh man was arrested after he led police on a chase through cornfields and county roads early Tuesday morning in rural Johnson County.

Allen James Jones, 32, was arrested on charges of resisting law enforcement, driving while suspended with a previous conviction, and driving while under influence of narcotics, for the incident that happened around 6:25 a.m.

Police responded to a report of a man who was slumped over in a vehicle in the 7500 block of E. County Road 650S, in Franklin, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

A sheriff’s deputy hit the window of the vehicle several times in an attempt to wake Allen. Allen woke up, saw the police officer, then drove his vehicle away, the report said.

Jones drove into a cornfield on the south side of County Road 650S, went back to the road and turned south on County Road 800E, where he drove through another cornfield, according to the report.

When he entered the road again, he was seen driving north in the southbound lane of County Road 800E. He did not stop at a stop sign at the intersection of County Road 800E and State Road 252, the report said.

Jones continued driving, crossing the center line multiple times on Lind Drive, leading to St. Andrews Avenue. He left the road again and hit a fire hydrant in the 200 block of St. Andrews Avenue, damaging his vehicle, according to the report.

After the accident, Jones appeared tired and his eyes rolled back into his head. He told police he did not know what had happened and that he had taken heroin, methamphetamine and prescription pills, the report said.

Field sobriety tests were not given, because of the accident. Officers transported Allen to Johnson Memorial Hospital for a blood draw, according to the report.

Jones, 480 Prosser Drive, Lot 53, was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was held on $6,400 bond.
