Flags to fly at half-staff to honor local soldier

The state’s top commander has asked that area residents and businesses lower their flags on Saturday to honor a Greenwood soldier who died recently.

Gov. Eric Holcomb on Thursday ordered flags in Johnson and Morgan counties be flown at half-staff to honor Staff Sargent Andrew Michael St. John, who died on Aug. 15 at Fort Hood, Texas. He was a father and husband, according to an Indiana National Guard news release.

St. John was working as an embedded observer controller/trainer with the Army National Guard Operations Group Wolf, the national guard said. He was an infantryman with Company B, 1st Battalion, 151st Infantry Regiment.

St. John has served tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. During his military career, he had been awarded the Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the NATO Medal and Indiana Military Volunteer Emblem, the news release said.

Flags should be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, according to a news release from the Governor’s Office.
