County unemployment rate up for third straight month

The Johnson County unemployment rate increased for the third straight month in a row.

The county’s unemployment rate was 2.9 percent in July, up from 2.8 percent in June.

Johnson County’s increase is less significant than that of the state, which saw unemployment go up to 3.6 percent in July from 3.3 percent in June.

The Johnson County and state unemployment rates match what they were in July of 2018. More than 83,000 Johnson County residents were employed at the end of July, and about 2,400 were unemployed.

This data comes from the July report released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Johnson County has the fourth-lowest unemployment rate in central Indiana, tied with Rush, Posey and Decatur counties.

Vermillion County in western Indiana had the highest unemployment rate last month at 5.2 percent, while Bartholomew County (Columbus) was tied with Gibson and Dubois counties for the lowest unemployment rate at 2.6 percent.
