Church donates school supplies to ease teachers’ burden

Emmanuel Church is doing its part to make sure teachers in Johnson County are well equipped for the start of the school year.

The five-campus church visited 11 elementary schools in Johnson County, donating hundreds of boxes of school supplies. Teachers often pay $800 to $1,000 of their own money for supplies, according to a news release from the church.

Including three Indianapolis public schools, the church congregation donated $10,800 worth of supplies to 14 schools. The 432 boxes each contained about $25 worth of supplies and included Sharpies, tissues, dry erase markers, Ziploc bags, pencils, disinfectant wipes and puzzles or games. Teachers received a thank you note from the church, a $5 gift card to a local coffee shop and a $25 gift card to United Arts and Education, according to the release.

Emmanuel Church invited those teachers to its Teacher Appreciation Weekend, which will take place on Saturday and Sunday.

"The purpose of having an entire weekend dedicated to teachers is to show them they are loved and known," Lead Pastor Danny Anderson said in the release. "The work they do not only impacts our children, but it also impacts our communities."

The initiative started last year, when Emmanuel Church donated supplies to 10 schools, according to the release.
