Local future teachers receive scholarship

Aspiring teachers from Johnson County were recently selected to receive the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship.

Students who commit to teaching in Indiana for five consecutive years are eligible to receive $7,500 per year for up to four years to get a teaching license.

Nearly 400 students and 200 scholarships were awarded to students across the state, including these recipients from Johnson County:

Caroline Marot, Greenwood Community High School, attending Indiana University Bloomington

Ethan Rather, Franklin Community High School, attending Hanover College

wins library scholarship

The Greenwood Public Library has awarded Century of Reading Scholarship to an Indian Creek High School student.

Kaylin Todor has received the $5,000 scholarship.

She plans to attend DePauw University or Butler University to study chemistry as a pre-medicine student.

Student earns computing honorable mention

Julia Rather has received an honorable mention for the Indiana Affiliate NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing.

The award recognizes high school women for their computing-related achievements and interests as part of an effort to encourage more young women to choose careers in technology.

A total of 24 award recipients and 25 honorable mentions were selected from high schools across the state of Indiana for their outstanding aptitude and interest in information technology and computing, solid leadership ability, good academic history, and plans for post-secondary education.

Students place well in congressional art contest

Rep. Trey Hollingsworth (IN-09) announced the winners of the 2019 Congressional Art Competition.

The Congressional Art Competition is an annual opportunity for high school students to showcase their art and to recognize and encourage artistic talent across the nation.

Local winners include:

Third place: Christian Werner, Center Grove High School, for “Heartland.” The work will be on display in Hollingsworth’s Franklin office.

Honorable Mention: Adam Freeland, Franklin Community High School, for “The Hermit.” The work will be on display in the Jeffersonville office.

Center Grove foundation awards scholarships

The Center Grove Scholarship Fund, a part of the Center Grove Education Foundation, awarded over $54,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors.

Roncalli students win awards in art contest

In May, Roncalli High School students were awarded a scholarship and two students were recognized for their work in the art contest by Right to Life of Indianapolis.

Senior Isabel Elsener was awarded the 2019 Joan Byrum Pro-Life Scholarship for $1,000. The scholarship is given in recognition of dedicated pro-life activity and attitudes while in high school and in promoting respect for the worth and dignity of all human life, including the lives of the unborn, the disabled and the elderly, until natural death.

Senior Jaidly Anciso won first place, and freshman Audrey Rearick, who won second place, for their artwork in the Right to Life Student Art Competition. They were also presented with awards and checks for $250 and $200 and $250 to Roncalli for having the first-place winner in the competition.

Indian Creek students spend day with Morning Pointe residents

Each year, the students of Indian Creek Middle School celebrate a “day of caring” by going out into the community and volunteering their time and services.

A group of students visited Morning Pointe of Franklin to spend time with the assisted living and Alzheimer’s memory care community’s residents, leading devotions, playing volleyball, chatting, and crafting with the residents.

Local church hosting vacation bible school

A Greenwood church is hosting their vacation bible school, starting today.

Concordia Lutheran Church’s vacation bible school is 9 to 11:30 a.m. through Friday, at the church, 305 Howard Road.

Saints Francis and Clare student wins essay contest

The Association of Indiana Counties and Star Financial Bank have named a local fourth grader as the National County Government Week essay contest winner.

Thomas Mallers’ essay was chosen over entries from other fourth graders across the district. Mallers, a student at Saints Francis and Clare Catholic School, received $100 for winning the contest. One winner was chosen in each of the AIC’s six districts.

This year’s theme was “Ensuring the Administration of the Indiana Elections Process.” Essays were judged on how well students discussed the county’s role in the election process.
